It’s said that we Celts are unique in that we took two instruments that annoy the most people in the world and placed them in the ‘same band’ – we are, of course, talking here about drums and bagpipes! And in George Square, there’s been no shortage of both all this week, as it’s been the loudly beating heart of Glasgow’s Piping Live! festival in the city, that culminated on Saturday with the World Pipe Band Championships.

This is the pinnacle of the piping world, with over 230 bands from 16 nations competing for the coveted title, and they have been associated with Glasgow now for over 60 years.  Thousands of pipers and drummers from around the globe congregated on Glasgow Green for the main competition, with bands coming not just from Scotland, Ireland and Europe, but also from as far afield as Canada, Oman, Malaysia, the US, New Zealand and Australia. And the winners this year were Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia – the first Scottish winners in 10 years.

I must tell you though of the American tourists nicely framing today’s photo from one of the very many George Square Piping Live! events.  It was past 7pm when I took this shot, and he turned round to me and said “Hey, Buddy. How late does the bagpipe band play?”  And I just couldn’t resist it by quickly quipping back “Oh, about a half beat behind the drummer.”
